A Redemptive Moment

With the news media having a lot of tragedy to feast upon in recent weeks – the apparent slaughter of the innocents in Afghanistan, the ugly controversies swirling in Florida – there was one quiet, almost unreported, moment that can be seen as redemptive for the whole nation.

A Christian lady stood in a courtroom in Jackson, Mississippi and forgave the three killers of her brother, a man they had brutally murdered in June 2011.

The Great Divorce Revisited

RIVERSIDE, CA – “We must divorce ourselves from everything that stands in the way of God…Sometimes it is not so much our evil deeds that keep us from God but our good deeds. Maybe we love someone more than we love God, maybe we have turned our rights, our business, our art, our country, or our intellects into the rival of God and therefore we must lay all good things down…This is the great divorce.”

These were the dominant themes racing through the mind of the British writer C.S. Lewis when he penned his novel, “The Great Divorce,” in 1945. Published in 1946, TGD has now been rendered into an effective stage play by a team that included the Director of California Baptist University’s November productions of this dramatized Lewis novel. Nine of us from our Glendora New Covenant Fellowship made the one-hour drive last Saturday afternoon for the 2PM matinee and were not disappointed.

Grace Comunion Church started on March 21, 2004 as a church plant from Glendora. Like our friends and neighbors in the Inland Empire we've had our share of ups and downs since then!

The "debt bomb" and house foreclosures probably hit the Rancho Cucamonga area harder than most. That definitely affected us as a church. We reached a high of 32 there at the Lion's Club in 2005 but soon felt the effects of people moving and relocating. From 2006 to 2011 we bivouacked as a house church on Sunday mornings between Fontana and Rialto before settling down last year in Ontario-Montclair.

The good news is that through all this by God's grace we have lived up to our motto of being "a house of prayer for all people." We'll never forget the year 2005 and praying for our relatives in Florida as hurricanes pummelled that stricken coastline. Now we intercede for each other as we pass through trials of family losses and personal healing and the job crisis we collectively face. Yes, we've takin' a lickin' and kept on tickin' through the overruling grace of the Holy Spirit of power.
